Kelli Higgins

Hi, I’m Kelli. As a Contracted Unlicensed Outpatient Psychotherapist through Peacetree Family Institute, my focus is on delivering mental and behavioral health services with an emphasis on tailored, individualized, person-centered care. I believe this is not just a career choice, but a calling to serve and make a difference in people’s lives which was driven by my personal upbringing in rural South Dakota bordering the Rosebud Reservation and educational background. Once completing my Bachelor of Science degree in Family of Social Science with a double minor in Youth Studies & Family Violence Prevention from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2010, I was offered the opportunity to move back to my hometown of Winner, SD and work on the Rosebud Reservation providing crisis intervention support to children up through young adulthood faced with emergency life-threatening situations, such as sexual assault, trauma, or other criminal victimization; mental illness; suicidal intervention/prevention; thoughts of suicide or homicide; and loss or drastic changes in relationships.

Clinical Interests:

I have found that a strength of mine is working with those who may be struggling with interfering behaviors. I have a strong background in providing Solution Focused Based Therapy (SFBT) and mental health services to children through young adulthood with Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED), struggling with trauma, conduct disorders, anger, discipline, attention deficit disorders, educational challenges, depression and other social and emotional life. Working towards identifying and exploring issues, developing coping skills, and improving psychological well-being are a few values and principles that guide my work.

Clinical Approach:

Understanding the intricacies of the human mind and behavior has always captivated me and my passion for psychology had been a driving force for obtaining my Master of Science in Psychology from Capella University in 2017 and actively pursuing my Doctoral degree. I believe self-discovery is essential while providing person-centered care services and having the ability to understand and empathize with unique perspectives, motivations, and experiences is critical.

I am a proud mom to 2 boys (10-year-old & 6-year-old). These two have both found their niche for football and accepted the opportunity to be a part of the NFL Flag Football Specialty League! That being said…. we stay busy year-round traveling to leagues throughout the USA! I admit, I have become “that mom” on the sidelines being their biggest cheerleader acting as though each game is the Super Bowl, but very proud they know I believe in them and will always support them shooting for the stars! When we have a free weekend, family has always been #1, so there are never 2nd thoughts of making the short 7-hour trek over to South Dakota to spend the weekend with family.
